PURPOSE OF THIS CLASS
A strong emphasis in the ELA classroom is that of communication and much of this year we will be focusing on learning how to better understand a variety of topics and communicate our ideas regarding those concepts. These skills are important as they allow anyone to better critically evaluate their surroundings. Through the units that I have selected for this class, we will learn what it means to be a “citizen” and how we can critically analyze information that we consume to make valuable decisions for the future.
This year, class will focus mainly on learning through self-directed, project-based learning, and group work. Therefore, each student will be accountable for participating in order to facilitate a safe learning environment. Students will be expected to come to class prepared for the day’s activities and discussions. This year the students will focus less on the individual and more about the self in community. Or rather, they will learn about their individual insights in a context of respect for their classroom community. I hope that through these methods, students will be compelled to engage in their own learning.
